HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #22

Day #22

Just a quick update to let you all know how much I have read, or in this case, how much I haven't read.
Even though I was hoping by this stage to have read more than three books, I am an adult with two children and basically "adult responsibilities", having time to actually sit down and read is rare. So really three completed books isn't that bad.

I'm hoping to finish Goblet of Fire before December finishes, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #8

Day #8

I thought I read a lot today, but it seems that I didn't.
I'm half way through at the moment, so hopefully tomorrow or the day after I can finish Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Also, is it strange that my love for Harry Potter is growing more and more? I can not wait to read my children these books.

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #7

Day #7

I forgot to do an update for day six....and I didn't read anything.

Day seven was a more productive day, as I started the second book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

There are so few books out there that can still be enjoyable to read over and over again. Harry Potter has to be one of them.

I also watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, because it was begging me on Netflix to watch. Also something that made me the happiest mother in the world happened, it was my four year old sons first time watching it, and he is now a fan.
He's made me a proud mummy :)

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #4 and #5

Day #4 and #5

"Catherine, you said there was going to be a daily update on your blog", you might ask.
"I can explain" is usually my response.

It's not that I forgot to post an update, actually day four nothing happened. I didn't read anything.
Yeah, I thought I was embarrassed on reading a few pages, no, reading absolutely nothing is. So really there wasn't any point in me posted a blog just to tell you I didn't read anything at all.

Let's forget about day four and go onto day five.
I FINISHED!!

Because of my dismal day yesterday I thought I'll kick my ass into gear and read.

My problem I have at the moment is; should I write individual reviews on each Harry Potter book or do it as a series? And should I also start watching the movies as well?

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #3

Day #3

Not much to report today. I did read more than the previous two days, but I still have not finished the first book. I should, okay I'm hoping, to finish Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone today and then I can start on the next one.

This is a short but sweet update. Hopefully tomorrow it will be longer.

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #2

Day #2

Day two was supposed to be a better day of reading, but of course that wasn't the case. Actually it was so bad that I was thinking about not posting an daily update. But I did say I was going to do it, and I am.
A lot of things got in the way yesterday, kids, Christmas shopping and Vlogmas videos. Seriously, there was a lot to watch. So there wasn't a lot of time for reading.

I'm just going to leave it at that....

HarryXmasToYou 2015 ~ Day #1

I've realised I haven't explained on my blog what I was doing this December.
I was going to do this anyway, actually I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I thought Christmas would be the perfect time. That is to marathon read the Harry Potter series.
It wasn't until I saw on Instagram there was a Harry Potter book and movie marathon, that I thought it was meant to be.

#HarryXmasToYou is a marathon of everything Harry Potter for the month of December. I won't be participating in watching the movies, with a four year old and a three month old, I just don't have the time. But I will be participating in the reading.

Since I've been slack on the blog posts, I thought I'll do a daily update on my progress.
So without further ado, let's start with day one.

Day #1

I didn't get a lot of reading done, the first day of December is the busiest (okay, every day is busy in my household). I'm not worried about this, I'm hoping to do at least finish the book on day two, since when I last read it (a very, very long time ago) I read it in one day.
Don't worry, I question the way my brain works as well.

Movie Review ~ Cinderella (2015)

CastEdit

Review

Yes, it has taken me long enough to finally watch this movie. I'm a huge fan of Disney Princess films, so when I heard they were adapting Cinderella and Richard Madden (who plays Robb Stark in Game of Thrones), was portraying Prince Charming, excitement was an understatement.
There was a number of reasons why I never saw this in cinemas or why I didn't buy the DVD straight away, but I'm not going to go into that. It was actually an email from Netflix telling me they added it. Literally not two seconds after I got the email, I stopped everything I was doing and watched the movie.

I loved it!! It was such a true adaptation of the original story. It wasn't their own "take" on the classic or major plot changes, everything was how it should be. Yes of course there were minor tweaks to it, but overall it was spectacular. It brought a lot of memories back to when I first watched Disney's cartoon version of Cinderella.

The cast were great, of course Richard Madden was amazing, but Lily James did a great portrayal of Cinderella. Especially how she would interact with the animals.
And I can't forget Cate Blanchett, seriously this woman can do anything when it comes to portraying different characters. No surprises as she is an Australian :)

Such a magical romantic movie to watch, I can not wait for my daughter to be older so she would be able to watch it as well.
I find stories like this don't give girls this false take on finding a prince and living happily ever after. For me I think Disney movies, especially this one tells us, especially young girls, that if you are kind to others, people will be kind to you.
Cinderella is the perfect example of this. Well that's my take on it anyway.

My star rating for Cinderella is:

Tea Tuesday ~ Printed Books vs EBooks

This has been the biggest debate since reading books on an electronic device was invented. Do you prefer to read on an ebook or as a printed book?

Now I can see why people would want to compare the two, and why some condone reading on the other format, but when you really think about it, both have pros and cons.
Here are a few that I can think of:

  • Printed books have no battery life. That's right, whenever you want you can read books without having to worry about charging it.

  • EBooks are money savers. It's much cheaper to buy books in an ebook form than printed. And here is the deal breaker; you can get free book!
  • Printed books has a smell. When you open a new or old book, put your face right in there and give one good sniff. It's a book nerds heaven scent. You can't do that with ebooks.
  • Bookshelves. A great place to show off your books when people come around. It's not the same is ebooks.

  • Reading at night. Admit it, you have all done it, or tried to do it. The best way to read a book at night is ebook format. Why you ask, well it has its own inbuilt light. You can adjust the brightness of that light, which means in the end you can read as late as you want. Sleep is overrated.

But in the end does it matter how you prefer to read, the more important thing is that you are reading. I actually read both formats, and that's because of the reasons I gave earlier.
We should never judge people in how they are reading, we should encourage.

I'm sure the next big debate would be printed books vs audio books. But I'm sure I'll say the same thing I keep saying all the time, it doesn't matter how you read, as long as you READ!

NaNoWriMo Update - Day #1 & #2

I happy to say for the first two days of NaNoWriMo have been great. I kind of changed my mind on what I wanted to write, at first it was just a chic lit but then I decided to add a paranormal aspect to it.
My main character finds out she is a witch.

Once I started I couldn't stop. I'm not joking, I had my notebook near me and I was basically writing in there every moment I had a free hand. This was hard considering I have a four year old son and a two month old daughter.
So saying that my word count for the last two days is:
3,743!!

I am shocked that I have written this much. Maybe it's because I love this story that I'm creating. Whatever the reason is, I hope it never stops.

NaNoWriMo 2015

Guess what I'm doing again this year....okay to be honest it isn't a hard thing to guess considering the title of this blog and that massive picture above.
I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month for the second time. Well I don't like to talk about last year, that was a complete failure.
This year however will be a success....or close to it.

I do have a rough guess on what I will be writing about, but if that all goes pear shape I do have other back up stories.

If it's your dream to write a book, or you want to do it for fun, I think this is a great way to finally do it. It motivates you, which is something I need. Just that extra push.

I will (hopefully) be doing daily update blogs throughout November. I'll let you know how I'm progressing, or lack of.

The Hopefuls BookClub ~ Booktober TBR

Recently (today in fact) I joined a bookclub on Goodreads, The Hopefuls BookClub. Every month they pick a book to read as a group, except October.
In October there is a challenge to read four books, a book a week.
I did hear they all vote for the four books for everyone to read at once, but this year we get to choose what books we personally want to read.
I thought this was a brilliant idea, plus I really wanted to join a monthly bookclub.

So for this booktober challenge I picked the following books.

by Sarah J. Maas

by George Orwell

by Virginia Woolf

by Anne Fortier

Film Review ~ Gnomeo and Juliet

Synopsis

From the director of Shrek 2 comes your chance to step into the secret world of garden gnomes - Gnomeo & Juliet. Perfect for the whole family, this fresh and funny makeover of one of the world's most timeless stories features music from Sir Elton John, and the voice talents of Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and Sir Michael Cane.
Caught up in a feud between neighbours, Gnomeo and Juliet must overcome as many obstacles as their namesakes. But with flamboyant pink flamingo and epic lawnmower races, can this young couple find lasting happiness?

Review

Now before you start, I know this film was released at the beginning of 2011 and we are now close to the end of 2015, so why has it taken me this long to finally watch this, well I have a very good explanation.
Romeo and Juliet is my all time favourite tragic plays by William Shakespeare, so when someone does a remake of it either in a movie, book or some other form, I'm always sceptical. I'm just worried someone is going to destroy a story that I hold dear to me. So you can see why it took me forever to finally watch this kids adaptation.

I'm so happy I sucked it up and watched it. Funny, beautiful, musical, a great combination for a kids movie. And surprisingly a great adaptation.

At the moment my mind is racing wanting to write down everything I love about Gnomeo and Juliet, so where do I begin....?

Okay, let me start with the music. When I heard it was not only produced by Sir Elton John, but he also did the music, it was instantly a winner.
I'm a big Elton John fan, right from when I first heard his music for The Lion King. So I knew instantly I was going to fall in love with his new songs he specifically wrote for this movie; Hello, Hello and Love Builds A Garden. Such a beautiful score you can't help singing along to. Trust me, I've seen this movie at least ten times now and I can happily say I know the words to all the songs.

The complete cast are absolutely perfect. Not only the characters but the actors were all a great choice. Let me just list who voiced who, and if this doesn't get you excited....then you're crazy.

There were too many great scenes for me to go through. I either laughed out loud or said "Ooohhh, how adorable". And once I got onto google images all I want to do is post images of some of the scenes I loved....So here is one where Gnomeo meets Juliet for the first time. I wish I can add the song to this scene as well, it's just perfect.

My star rating for Gnomeo and Juliet is:
